Now for the update - the infection in my finger was a staphylococcus aureus. The Infectious Disease team is now trying to determine the exact species so theyll know the best antibiotic to treat it with. I have been being treated with IV Vancomycin and something else (cant remember the name) for now. Once ID is finished, they will know whether to continue with these meds or to change them. Either way, I will be coming home (hopefully tomorrow!!) on IV antibiotics. So, to all my nursing friends out there.....if you are comfortable with administering IV antibiotics via a port, please let me know!! A home health care agency will send someone out to instruct me on how to do this, but I AM NOT comfortable with accessing the port!!!! I need to know that it is being done correctly with no risk of contaminating the port!
