Thanks to everyone that took time to get in touch with me over the past week or so, to offer some from of solidarity, to let me know that my posts were of some use to them (that means a lot- Im very reserved, so I was feeling crazy vulnerable), to at least bother to listen to me when they had a contesting point of view. Only a handful of people in the big picture, but its good to know people are at least willing to leave their comfort zones and open up to discussing the underlying issues of race (which Ive been talking about for a while) and police brutality that underlie the Ferguson, MO situation. Its a damning indictment on Americas self-imposed narrative as one of the most democratic and just nations in the world. There is still a lot of discomfort and defensive posturing as were being asked to evaluate how we live and interact with each other. I can only hope that those with the privilege to run from that conversation will find time to step outside of themselves and truly listen to those without that privilege. What is happening in Missouri is tragic, but its also an opportunity to learn. To everyone raising their voices, my deepest gratitude. Im emotionally drained. Im going to take some time to learn more about everything that Ive been posting and commenting on, to work on something that I hope will be more effective than picking my fights on forums and comment threads, where any victory is minimal at best. Ill also try to get back in touch with some of the other aspects of my humanity (i.e. doing the stuff that I enjoy), so I dont lose sight of why the fight for equality is important. Im still following the news and keeping close to what is happening now, but I want to offer something useful and informative, and want make sure my energy is used to that end.
