Thanks to extensive community engagement from the Cape Fear - TopicsExpress

Thanks to extensive community engagement from the Cape Fear Riverkeeper and representatives of Waterkeeper Alliance, plans for the proposed Sanderson Farms slaughterhouse in Fayetteville, NC have been abandoned. In a surprising action on the morning of a scheduled public hearing, County Commissioners met behind closed doors and voted to cancel the hearing, thereby dashing any prospect that the the slaughterhouse would be constructed. This decision came after months of residents expressing concern over the environmental impact the plant would have on the community and waterways including the Cape Fear River. This is a major win for the people of Fayetteville, Cumberland County, and for the Cape Fear River. Locating a chicken slaughterhouse in Fayetteville, along with the associated need to construct 500-600 new chicken houses, each holding as many as 22,000 birds, would put an additional strain on the health of the Cape Fear River. The citizens of Fayetteville are to be commended for their opposition to this slaughterhouse, and it was our pleasure to stand with them in their efforts. -- Larry Baldwin, North Carolina CAFO Coordinator of Waterkeeper Alliance
