Thanks to the brotherhood - Marcus, Todd, and Brian - for a great evening of friendship and classic video. (And thanks to Marianne for fixing a delicious dinner for us.) First up was the powerful 1935 A Tale of Two Cities, featuring Ronald Colemans brilliant performance as Sydney Carton, the dissolute lawyer who sacrafices his life for the family he loves. I remarked after the movie that I couldnt read the last chapter of the novel aloud without my voice breaking if my life literally depended on it, and the movie always leaves me in the same condition. We followed that emotional wrenching with wrenching of another sort, via an episode of T.J. Hooker, in which William Shatner and Adrian Zmed resolve a hostage situation by falling through a ceiling. Then came our tribute to the great Eli Wallach, The Magnificent Seven, followed by a one-two punch of goofy TV monsters: invaders from the planet Centaur (dont even ask where that is) that looked like a cross between frogs and Las Vegas showgirls (Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea), and a Cajun Moss-Monster summoned from the dreams of an experimental sleep patient (Kolchak: The Night Stalker). Just a typical Friday night around here.
