Thanks to the efforts of CRF Board Member Warren Jackson and other community leaders, over 7,000 students in the 10th or 11th grades can see Selma for free in selected theaters in Los Angeles! Teachers can also reserve free tickets for groups of at least 25, but act quickly before all of the free tickets are used! Click here for the list of theaters and group ticket information: selmastudenttickets/. Not only is this a great activity for Martin Luther King Day, but this film provides a great opportunity to teach about civil rights (perfect for the 11th grade U.S. history standards). CRF has several resources you can use in your classroom: 1. History, articles, and discussion activities: crf-usa.org/black-history-mo…/black-history-month 2. A lesson focused on the Montgomery Bus Boycott: crf-usa.org/images/pdf/MontgomeryBusBoycott.pdf 3. A lesson focused on Brown v. Board of Education: crf-usa.org/images/pdf/BrownvBoard-Landmarks.pdf In addition, a comprehensive curriculum for the film will be available soon from BazanED: bazaned/. Warren and other individuals raised over $85,000 this week to pre-purchase tickets to ensure that Los Angeles youth could see this film. Students can walk up to the ticket box and show their school I.D. for free admission, but once the free tickets are used, they would have to pay. CRF advises you to reserve tickets. If your students go see Selma and would like to thank Warren and the rest of the people who made free tickets possible, please send notes to Keri Doggett at CRF, and she will forward.
