Thanks to the phenomenal Gevura Lauren Davis for inviting me to share my top 10 books that have had a lasting impact on me. Ive included quotes to give you some flavor about each. 1. The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster (who I had dinner with a couple of years ago!!): “So many things are possible just as long as you dont know theyre impossible.” 2. The Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu: “Success is as dangerous as failure. Hope is as hollow as fear.” 3. Zen and the Art of Motorcylce Maintenance by Robert Pirsig: “I argued that physical discomfort is important only when the mood is wrong. Then you fasten on to whatever thing is uncomfortable and call that the cause. But if the mood is right, then physical discomfort doesnt mean much.” 4. The Harry Potter book series by J.K. Rowling because they celebrate imagination and trust kids to be able to read way past grade level. Its our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are - far more than our abilities. 5. The Giver by Lois Lowry (I read it years before the movie): “They were satisfied with their lives which had none of the vibrance his own was taking on. And he was angry at himself, that he could not change that for them.” 6. Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson - because all you need to create an the entire world is a purple crayon and your imagination. 7. Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism Paperback by Gershom Scholem: ...what is Jewish mysticism? What precisely is meant by this term? Is there such a thing, and if so, what distinguishes it from other kinds of mystical experience? 8. Animal Farm by George Orwell: “The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.” 9. The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman: “You dont fight for peace sister, Nahara told me, You embrace it.” 10. The Secret Magdalene by Ki Longfellow (extraordinary but dense): Later, he tells us that Jews who love Greek or Egyptian ideas often hope to defend themselves from criticism by claiming these ideas are originally Jewish. It is, he says, understandable in a conquered people. So - what 10 books made an impression on you Carli Anderson, Kristin Brumm, Dode Levenson, Sheila Rubin Sonnenschein, Ariella Michal, and Tzilia Sacharow? List your top 10 and then ask 10 friends (I know I didnt do 10 friends!).
