Thanks you all for your responses to my previous post on the same subject. I am sorry i cant respond to each one of yous comments but generally the following is my response. Yes I have heard the claim that the president was invited and that there is a letter they are circulating to have been received by presidents office. We dont know which office of the President they went to. If at all the said letter Is genuine. Even the Rdcs office in a district, ISO office is presidents office. Presidents communication are not just put every where. The address of the president is state house kampala and its the Ppss office that handles HE the presidents programme and not any other. So those who were inviting should have taken trouble to know where to deliver the letter if at all what they are saying is not just a defensive excuse. If indeed the invitations were there , why were they not delivered and follow up made to confirm our participation by the organising committee? Does anyone want to claim that all relevant agencies of government disregarded the meeting ? Why have we(NrM) attended similar meetings in the past even when told on short notice? That is always the trick; claiming that we are invited and we make no shows. Its politics as usual That is however cheap strategy. I have personally been at those debates whenever am invited and i engage them no matter their hostile coached audiences. So there is nothing new. Our complaint is real. If indeed civil society in Uganda wants to promote meaningful political engagements for the benefit of the citizens, they should act as impartial umpires, provide neutral platforms of debate to all political contenders and actors and guard against opportunistic political groupings(like of Besigye and company) that have failed to Organize independently on their own but only want to ride on the ground of civil society. Civil society should not be FDC, NRM or DP. Neither should it be anybodys apologist or spokesperson. That is how civil society will emerge out stronger, genuine and therefore legitimate as a non partisan voice of the ordinary citizen. When those debates are organized let equal space be given to all political contenders in uganda. I have said this before and I will say it again and gain .
