This is the way I really feel about things. Its not me dragging around a bottle of absinthe and coming up with Baudelairian poems. Its me using everything I know to be true... To me, music either expresses ideas of liberty, or its made under the oppression of dictatorship. The only stuff Ive heard that has that freedom is traditional Anglo-American music. Thats all I know. Thats all Ive ever known. I was fortunate to come up at a time when the last of it existed. It doesnt exist anymore. People who came after me, I dont feel, were ever my peers or contemporaries, because they didnt really have any standing in traditional music. They didnt play folk songs. They heard me and thought, Oh, this guy writes his own songs, I can do that. They can, of course, but those songs dont have any resonance... In the early 90s, the media lost track of me, and that was the best thing that could happen. It was crucial, because you cant achieve greatness under media scrutiny. Youre never allowed to be less than your legend. When the media picked up on me again five or six years later, Id fully developed into the performer I needed to be and was in a position to go any which way I wanted. The media will never catch up again. Once they let you go, they cannot get you back. Its metaphysical. And its not good enough to retreat. You have to be considered irrelevant.
