For those who know how the permission for female altar servers came about, it had (and still has) little to do with service, or any association with being the privilege that it is, so much as an imaginary sense of justice and fairness. In fact, even though they are allowed in the Diocese of Arlington, less than half the parishes use them, as their use tends to cause many of the boys to stop serving. Given the maturity of the girls at that age when compared to the boys, the result is to trade one form of supposed unfairness for another. (I never refer to them as girl altar boys.
