: That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word (Ephesians 5:26). The word of God is presented to us in Scriptures in a variety of ways. When we think of it as food (bread) for the human soul, the Bible talks of the word as water, milk, meat and strong meat. Our scripture verse for today is the most emphatic presentation of Gods word as water. In subsequent times, we shall look at the other food metaphors for the word of God. The Word as water is the simplest presentation of the word of God. It is the water of life by which the very life of God flows into us as humans. The Word as water washes and cleanses the soul, removing the dirt of filthiness and uncleanness which we have gathered as we live in this world of sin, being defiled, first with original sin and then subsequently by our actual transgressions. Remember that the Scriptures say that we all fell in Adam with the rest of mankind. And then, having inherited the nature of sin, we lived under its power until the coming of Christ Jesus who brought the good news of deliverance from the bondage and guilt of sin. Without receiving the water of the word, there would be no salvation for the souls of men. It is in this regard that Titus 3:5 tell us about the washing of regeneration - the washing of the new birth. When Jesus came, He spoke the word of life to us, and for those who received His words, He pronounced them clean because of the word that they heard and received (John 15:3). And because water renews, refreshes and reinvigorates, so must we keep on receiving the water of the word for renewal of our character until we become conformed to the image of Christ. Friends, contrary to what some may think, there is no spiritual maturity that will make the water of the word irrelevant to your life. Christ must keep cleaning up the church with the washing of water by the word till He comes back to rapture the church. If you are part of that church, you must continue to allow the Lord to make you lie down beside the still waters of the word of God. There, you may not find so much noise and fleshly excitement that characterise most church meetings in our ultra modern world. You may not find high sounding teachings and complex revelations with which preachers mesmerise their listeners. But I assure that you will find comfort and rest for your soul. There you will also have opportunity to lay a proper foundation for a strong, stable and sound spiritual life. ~ FURTHER BIBLE READING - JOHN 17:1-19. ~ Exercises. 1.
