“That the MAV advocate to the State Government to introduce the registration of bicycles or the licensing of bicycle riders, to assist both the police and the public in identifying those cyclists involved in a traffic accident or those riders who fail to adhere to the road rules, and introduce education programs to increase awareness of the vulnerability of bicycle riders and encourage a safer and more considered road sharing experience among drivers and bicycle riders.” Sounds like a late April Fools joke, but it isn’t. This is a motion passed by Bayside City Council (Melbourne) to approach the Municipal Association of Victoria to pursue bicycle registration. bayside.vic.gov.au/documents/governance/25_March_2014__Ordinary_Meeting_Minutes_-_without_confidential.pdf Speaking to the Qld Inquiry into Cycling Issues, AGF CEO Tracey Gaudry said “with our focus on safety first and foremost, there is insufficient evidence worldwide to determine if safety benefits would be gained from bicycle registration or even a licence for bicycle riders.” This has wide ranging implications as MAV is a state body, so any decision they make could quite easily be applied across all of Victoria. What can you do? Contact your local Councillor, tell them what you think of this proposal, make your voice heard. Great pick-up by Cycle on this issue.
