That’s the lesson from the University of the Free State. In - TopicsExpress

That’s the lesson from the University of the Free State. In 2009, the university appointed its first black vice-chancellor, a Stanford-trained educator named Jonathan D. Jansen. He took a much more aggressive approach to cultural transformation, outlawing many institutional traditions and mandating a series of conversations between black and white students about what a new, neutral campus culture might look like. The process wasn’t always comfortable. White alumni attacked him in the press for betraying the university’s standards. But current black students say that it’s made a huge difference to their sense of ownership of the place. For the first time, Tshepo Moloi, a senior, told me, the campus feels like “a public space for all who live in it.” Please share your thoughts on what your wish of a representative South African academic institution is. nytimes/2014/10/19/opinion/sunday/a-paradox-of-integration.html?smid=fb-share&_r=0
