The 100 Club 24th January 2015 The 100 Club has been the home to the world longest running Northern soul all-nighters for the last 31 years, the 6ts Rhythm n Soul Club, started by the late Randy Cozens and Ady Croasdell of Kent Records UK and on Saturday The South Yorkshire Massive decided to head to the big city to check out this legendary club. Now I am not going to bore you with a history lesson on The 100 Club, we all know just how important this venue is historically and we are all aware of the contribution this club has made to The Northernsoul Scene both with the records it has championed and broken and for the sheer dedication and unswerving drive given by all involved. I shall start with the negative and get that of the way first but I will remind you of the old saying “You cannot have your cake and eat it”. Some time ago The 100 Club was in real trouble with falling attendance and an increasing bill for the promoter and it looked quite bleak, the only way this Allnighter was going to survive was to get people through the door but in doing so there would have to be a more open policy in who came in and that meant the great unwashed in the form of “none Soulies”, sacré bleu, I hear you say but this is a necessary evil. What you get at The 100 Club is a mix of interested youngsters and the hard corps who rub shoulders and clash elbows whilst doing their funky stuff, it gets messy, there are drinks on the dance floor and hardly room to dance and you jostle for dance floor space whilst getting pushed around by nineteen year old ballets student who insist on heaving their pert bosoms in your direction, it is fookin ace! It aint the place for those who want a massive dance space, it is a tiny place with a small dance floor so you have to get your mind set to 100 Club Mode or you will miss the occasion and not enjoy the brilliant atmosphere. Come 0300hrs most of the drinkers have left the club and the dance floor then becomes a blank canvas again for the art of dancing and dance we did! The music, well the powerhouse is Butch, he is a real Northernsoul Super Hero who keeps reinventing himself and dazzles me every time, it is always a privilege and an education to hear him spin his magic and it is a real Master Class. I wish I could name all of the new and crisp records I heard that night but I can’t and this is The 100 Club of old, spin after spin of high quality Soul Music with a health mix of Northernsoul, RnB, Jazz Funk, Modern, Newies the kitchen sink and the full Monty! There is something happening in Allnighter Land, something good, there is a vibrant and healthy push towards high octane, up tempo, smash your house up dance music with no boundaries. To get this you need an audience who are up for new sounds without reading the rule book and without the constraints of the Northernsoul Highway Code, The 100 Club is back, long live The 100 Club.
