The 1857 Prayer Elephant One day in 1857, Jeremiah Lamphier (a convert of Charles Finney), an obscure businessman turned street missionary, decided to hold a noonday prayer meeting at the Dutch Church in downtown New York. He waited alone for thirty minutes until finally six others made their way into the building to pray. “Within six months over ten thousand businessmen were meeting every day in similar meetings, confessing sin, getting saved, praying for revival.” It spread to the nation and from there to Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England. Results: 1.Evangelism 2,000,000 converts in America within two years 100,000 in Ulster 100,000 in Wales 300,000 in Scotland 1,000,000 in England 2. Social Concern United Way Red Cross YWCA YMCA - converts ministered to the armies of both North and South during the Civil War - 150,000 Confederates converted. Care for the poor and for orphans. 3. World Missions Hudson Carey and others revolutionized not only the call but the tactics of world missions. All this happened because one man decided it was time to pray!
