The 18th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Summit program has formally began in Kathmandu with a meeting of the SAARC Programming Committee. The EU has observer status in SAARC since 2006, and greatly values co-operation and regional integration in South Asia. We firmly believe that the EU can help consolidate the ongoing integration process through our economic influence in the region, our own historical experience of economic and trade integration and of dealing with diversity, and our interest in crisis prevention. Cooperation between the EU and SAARC notably seeks to promote the harmonisation of standards; facilitate trade; raise awareness about the benefits of regional cooperation; and promote business networking in the SAARC area.
