The 1909 Royal Commission for the Improvement of the City of Sydney and its Suburbs led to widespread remodelling of the city - major thoroughfares like William St, Elizabeth St, Park St and Oxford St were widened, which involved the mass demolition of the buildngs all along one side. The Commission also created new streets: one of these was Day St, for which many buildings, little courtyards and some smaller streets and laneways were resumed and demolished, never to be seen again, except in these photographs kept in the City Archives:
