The 1960s pop singer and actress Lulu is 65 today, born Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie in Glasgow, Scotland on Nov. 3, 1948. Shes best remembered for her one big hit that made it to #1 on Billboard in Oct. 1967, To Sir With Love. It was the theme song to a movie in which she had a small role with Sidney Poitier. The movies producers had several ideas for the title tune, but Lulu hated them all. I said to my friend Mark London, Theyre going to make me sing those rotten songs and it will be awful. Why dont you write the songs? The Canadian songwriter at first turned her down, but she was persistent and he ended up writing the melody for To Sir With Love in 5 minutes. The next day, lyricist Don Black came up with the words. I was over the moon, Lulu remembered. I just knew it was going to be a great song. Here she is singing the tune; not sure what the balloons on the floor all around her mean -- oh well, it was the Sixties. youtube/watch?v=GKClt5pJLFQ&feature=related
