The 1961-1962 Red Devil Basketball Team poses outside of the 1240 - TopicsExpress

The 1961-1962 Red Devil Basketball Team poses outside of the 1240 AM KLUK Radio Station, with their District Tournament Championship trophy, then step inside the studios for a live, on-air interview. The 1240 Frequency on the AM Band has stayed the same since 1953, but the call letters were changed in the 60s from KLUK to KEVA. High School Basketball Season doesnt roll around for quite some time, but Fall Golf at EHS begins tomorrow, (Aug. 20) as the first sport out of the gate, with the Lady Red Devils and Red Devils taking part in the Riverton Invitational for the Varsity squads, while the JV Golfers travel to Afton for the Star Valley Invitational. Action gets underway at noon on Thursday and 9 AM on Friday. EHS Fall Golf will remain center stage on Aug. 28, with the Rock Springs Invitational, before the other sports get underway, most the following day. Red Devil Volleyball will begin their 2014 campaign as usual, with the always-challenging Cokeville Invitational, drawing some of the Cowboy States best, along with teams from Utah and Idaho, on Friday & Saturday, Aug. 29 & 30. Pool play begins bright and early at 8 AM on Friday, to set up Saturdays brackets. Lady Red Devil and Red Devils Cross-Country will hear their first starting gun of the fall season beginning at 3:30 PM in the Green River Invitational, with Evanston racing against 3A Lyman, 4A Rock Springs and the host Wolves schedule to compete at Zehwi/Stratton-Meyers Park. Red Devil Football travels to the Capital City to begin Class 4A gridiron competition with a 7 PM kickoff against the host Bison of Cheyenne South on Friday, Aug. 29. The home opener is slated for Friday, Sept. 5, with the perennial power Campbell County Camels invading Kay Fackrell Stadium. There is no preseason or Zero Week in the 4A ranks, as every game counts, with the ten largest high schools in Wyoming all playing each other, over the course of nine weeks. Lady Red Devil Swimming and Diving travels to Rawlins for the grueling Pentathlon on Saturday, Aug. 30 with an 11 AM start time. Every sport begins in August, BEFORE the Labor Day Weekend for the first time in memory, which seems somewhat odd, with the new WHSAA policy being implemented for the winter sports seasons which follow, providing more or a gap for Wyomings student-athletes, between seasons. As was the case, there was sometimes no gap or even an overlap, from one sport to another. Winter sports season practices will not be allowed to begin until after Thanksgiving, about the same time as the first contests had been scheduled in the past. This is for the best, and the rationale in understood. Lets just hope longstanding events, steeped in tradition, which have become somewhat reliant on out-of-state participation, as a big part of the team rosters participants and fan base are still able to attract those out-of-state competitors, if their schedules allow, or redefine/restructure themselves. Our schedules are changing, statewide; were all in the same 307 Boat -- theirs are not, and they may not have that weekend free, a couple weeks later in the year. Im thinking specifically of the rich tradition of Red Devil Wrestlings EI set for Dec. 12 and 13, in 2014. Will those Utah schools (and other nearby states) be able to work it into their schedules? Will it make for a huge impact, if instead of getting started a week or so before Wyoming schools do, as in the past, that our neighboring states high school athletic programs may now have upwards of a three-week jump on us? What about Green Rivers Flaming Gorge Classic Basketball Tournament, and countless other tournaments and invitationals? This will be an interesting year, for sure, but Im betting on the creativity of successful event planners to consider and discover alternate ideas, to prevail. Plan B and C have likely already been formulated. Some events may be changed forever, but that doesnt mean they wont be just as good as the way weve come to know them. Ch-ch-ch-Changes... But before that, heres to all the excitement brewing with the fall season sports and activities, at EHS! GO RED DEVILS!
