The 1st Cavalry Division, a combat division of the United States Army, was deployed in Adagi on Tuesday as part of an ongoing deployment to NATO forces. The 150 US soldiers used five M1A2 Abrams tanks and 11 Bradley Fighting Vehicles in a demonstration of their combat training upon their arrival. The Abrams, armed with a M256A1 120 mm smooth bore cannon, also feature one M2HB 50 calibre heavy machine gun and twin M240 7.62mm machine guns. The Bradley armoured personnel carriers are armed with a 25 mm M242 Bushmaster. The 1st Cavalry Division is featured in the 1979 film Apocalypse Now.
