The 1st Troops Memorial event this morning in Kalgoorlie-Boulder was a huge success. Congratulations to Anne Skinner and her tireless committee for putting the event together, and to all 187 people who assembled and marched today in honour of those who departed Kalgoorlie on this day, 100 years ago. Kevin Blair played the part of Lt-Colonel Lyon Johnston, and Henry Hatch the role of Sgt J. M. McLeery who both led the enlistees from the 11th Battalion barracks in Cheetham St to the railway station in Forrest Street. A very moving ceremony was also conducted for the 50 men who left for War that day, but were killed in the line of duty and did not return. Speeches were presented this morning by Mayor Ron Yuryevich and he was joined by Wendy Duncan, MLA, in reading out the names of the 50 departed. ** Please feel free to tag names in the photographs and share the story elsewhere, with acknowledgement to Everything Kalgoorlie-Boulder, thank you.
