The wealthy politician was, instead, building an amicable relationship with Putin. That relationship came with a big payoff. Before his election as prime minister in 2012, Ivanishvili had acquired 1 percent ownership of OAO Gazprom (MCX:GAZP), Russia’s natural gas export monopoly, owned by the Russian government. That same year, Gazprom earned $37.9 billion, the biggest profit of any company in the world. Ivanishvili is so rich, his $5 billion fortune is almost half Georgia’s total GDP.
