The 2013 Cross Country season kicked off with the first leg of the East Cork Cross Country Championships in Youghal on Sunday 22nd with juvenile competition for even ages from u10 to u18. The weather was ideal for the start of the seaon easing new-comers in gently & the mild dry conditions made for very enjoyable racing for athletes & spectators alike. Midleton AC started out strong in the championship claiming 6 team medals on the day... 3 gold, 2 silver & 1 bronze. The first of these came from the first race of the day, the girls u10. Siri Forde started strong & ran consistenly well to finish in joint 3rd position, followed by team mates Leah Parker, Isabel Kelly & Helise Loor Vahi (running up an age) whose combined efforts claimed the silver team medal for the club. Also lining out for the girls u10 were Caoimhe Geoghegan, Síofra O’Brien, Eabha O’Brien, Shauna Dillon, Aminat Olatunji, Jennifer Adebayo, Hayleigh Wall Wallace, Jessica Adebayo, Aliyah Aina & Tyler Emerahu. The boys u10 swept the medals board finishing in 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th position and taking the gold team medal. Diarmuid Healy led the group from the start and powered his way home in first place followed by David Cremin, Paul Curtin, and Aaron Brodkorb. Closely followed home by Sean Kavanagh, Toby Adebayo, Brian Cott, Sean Kavanagh, Sean Hennessy, Sean Fraser & George Alamu. A superb team display by the boys. The bronze team medal was won by the girls u12 with the first 4 Midleton girls finishing in the top 15. Caoimhe Carey ran a great race finishing 4th just outside the individual medals, followed by Lia O’Brien who came 12th, Helene Vahi (running up an age) & Alanna Drennan completed the team, ahead of Sophie Mulcahy, Fiona Hourigan, and Blessing Alamu all of whow ran very well for the club. Hameed Olatunji ran superbly in the boys u12 finishing in 5th position followed by Ciarmhac Smyth, who was running up an age, in 10th place. Niall Hegarty, Aaron Coughlan, Robert Dillon, Luke Hourigan, Sultan Adebayo & Awwal Aina also ran well on the day. The second team gold came from the girls u14 with a superb performance by Tamzin Muldowney who led the race from the start and strided home in a convincing 1st position ahead of team mate Lucy Wallace who ran exceptionally well to finish in 3rd place. Aoife Mitchel was just behind in 4th while Emily Mulchay crossed the line in 10th position, a superb result for the team, 3 of whom were running up an age. The boys u14 were equally successful claiming the gold and bronze individual medals. Jack O’Shea (running up an age) ran a fantastic race holding his place towards the front of the group for most of the course before taking the lead on the final lap and finishing in 1st place. Kieran Walsh sprinted home in a dramatic finish to take the bronze followed by Frank O’Brien (also running up an age) in 8th place and Cathal Mossisey close behind finishing 12th. A very strong team performance claiming the silver team medal for the boys, only one point off gold. Also competing were Ben Killeen, Tyrese Emerahu, Danny Kavanagh, Shay Keane & Emanuel Alamu. Midletons third Gold team medal was complements of the girls u16 who all finished in the top 10. Norah O’Brien and Caroline Leahy ran exceptionally well from the start and held their positions throughout the course finishing in 2nd & 3rd place respectively ahead of Jessica Strain in 4th, Ellen O’Shea in 5th & Tara O’Keeffe in 10th . A truly impressive performance by the 5 girls all of whom were running up an age. Donal Griffin ran up an age in the boys u16 and claimed first place, as did Caoilinn Hickey running up an age in the girls u18 to take gold. Well done to both. And the highlight of the day for many of the younger athletes who stayed on to watch the Novice & Masters races, was supporting two of their training coaches competing in the womens 4000m. Sally Drennan and Joan Hough lined out for the over 45’s and both were cheered on by their young supporters & came home in an impressive 2nd & 3rd place respectively. A superb finish to a very enjoyable first day out for the cross country season. Athletes are back in full training for the County Championships (even ages) which take place in Carrig na bhFearr on Sun 6th October. Good luck to all taking part.
