The 2013 National Livestock Export Industry Sheep, Cattle and Goat - TopicsExpress

The 2013 National Livestock Export Industry Sheep, Cattle and Goat Transport Performance Report is now available on the LiveCorp website. There is a lot of very detailed information in the report providing breakdowns by species, time of year, load ports and major destinations over the calendar year. The key statistics for 2013 are:- - Overall mortality rate for sheep during sea transport to all destinations during 2013 was 0.68% (the lowest on record). This equates to 13,204 mortalities in 1,940,000 sheep exported over 40 voyages. - Overall mortality rate for cattle exported from Australia in 2013 was 0.11% (888 mortalities in 840,000 cattle exported) across 247 voyages. - Overall mortality rate among the 1,776 goats exported by sea in 2013 was 0.06% which equates to 1 mortality across 3 voyages. - There were 35,875 sheep (139 flights), 9,691 cattle (54 flights) and 74,484 goats (111 flights) exported by air during 2013. The overall mortality rates were 0.13% for sheep (45 mortalities), 0.69% for cattle (67 mortalities) and 0.01% for goats (9 mortalities). The attached graph will show the industrys performance since 1995. As I have previously said here, exporters take no comfort in the loss of any livestock. Our focus remains on seeing more livestock arrive in market fit and healthy. Reports on new vessels coming into the trade is good news on this front as is our ongoing research into some of the key causes of onboard mortalities and what we can do to minimise or prevent them.
