The 2014-2015 State Board of Education goals and the Surry County Schools strategic plan both include the need to customize and personalize education for students. To continue the progression of customized and personalized education in the Surry County School System, the Surry County Board of Education named Mr. Lucas Gillispie the Surry County School System Director of Academic and Digital Learning. Mr. Gillispie presently serves as District Instructional Technology Coordinator in Pender County Schools. Mr. Gillispie is a native of Dobson and a 1994 graduate of Surry Central High School. He received his undergraduate degree and master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. In addition to serving as District Instructional Technology Coordinator in Pender County Schools since 2007, Mr. Gillispie has served as a teacher at Topsail High School and Surry Central High School. He is also an Instructional Design Consultant for GoGo Labs. Mr. Gillispie is committed to his profession. He recently stated, “My passion is leveraging technology to help grow both students and educators to achieve their fullest potential while fostering the joy of lifelong learning. My graduate work in instructional systems design, curriculum development, change management, data analysis, and assessment are applicable to a variety of challenges faced by North Carolina school systems.” He has served the North Carolina Technology in Education Society (NCTIES) as Director of Region 2. He has also received many honors including the 2013 Gamification Awards - Best Use of Engagement Techniques in Education and the 2011 Association of Virtual Worlds – Virtual Excellence Award. Mr. Gillispie received nominations for Edublogs - Best Educational WIKI for 2010 and 2011 and in 2012 the National School Board Association – Twenty to Watch. Additionally, his has published several articles in School Library Journal, Learning and Leading with Technology, and The Electronic Journal of Mathematics and Technology. Mr. Lucas Gillispie is married to Elizabeth. He and his wife have two daughters, Elorah, age 9 and Teaghan, age 6. Dr. Jill Y. Reinhardt, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, remarked, “We are excited about the broad range of experience and vision Mr. Gillispie will bring to our district. His knowledge of digital learning, technology program planning, grant writing, workshop facilitation and program evaluation are qualities needed for this new position. We look forward to Mr. Gillispie joining our team as we emphasize personalized and individualized learning through technology from the classroom to the district.”
