The 2014 vintage in the Great Southern was near perfect. Winter - TopicsExpress

The 2014 vintage in the Great Southern was near perfect. Winter was relatively mild and spring had well above average rainfall resulting in strong vine growth and canopies, and above average fruit set. This was instrumental in creating steady ripening in the white varieties. The resulting whites look fantastic with sensational flavour profiles with underlying acid structures developing in the aromatic varieties such as West Cape Howe Riesling, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Our ‘new kid on the block’, Pinot Grigio is a wine to watch out for. Great drinking in the near future! The reds started coming in late March and finished in late April. We had exceptional ripening weather with a small amount of rain which refreshed the vine canopies enabling them to reach their optimum ripeness. The Cabernet Sauvignon dry grown 40 year old fruit and the estate grown Mount Barker cabernets look exceptional. As does the Shiraz from both Frankland and Mount Barker vineyards with ripe fruit flavours and elegant tannin structure. Look out for stunning quality in the Single Vineyard Series. Tempranillo from Frankland also looks wonderful with brooding, full, rich flavours already showing through. The lack of heat spikes and the consistently warm weather will see some of the best wines from these blocks produced to date. A ripper of a vintage!
