The 25 Days of Great Singers Day 23: ELVIS PRESLEY The King. People tend to only think of the older Elvis and so its easy to think only of the countless impersonators and imitators and parodies out there. But seriously for a good while there he was absolutely as good as it gets, folks. Listen to Heartbreak Hotel. I mean it. Like right now. The vast majority of that song is just him and an upright bass. His voice was like no other and he had a presence that couldnt be denied. He brought something to the music that no white singer had brought before. He was a croonercountryrocksoul singer who became a 20th century icon. Bill Monroes Blue Moon of Kentucky, Thats All Right, Blue Suede Shoes, Hound Dog, Dont Be Cruel, Mystery Train, Suspicious Minds, Jailhouse Rock, and so much more... Do I really need to go on? His voice had an almost otherworldly aspect to it. It was unreal. And it wasnt just the voice itself that made him the legend he is, it was the emotion and fresh take he put into everything he sang. Its no wonder the man burnt out and went out the way he did -- he didnt half ass anything. He used his whole ass. Heres Blue Christmas from his 68 Comeback Special.
