The 451st flew their last mission to Ploesti on 17 August 1944. This was part of an all out bombing offensive that the 15th Air Force was mounting against that infamous target. It was a final effort to knock out that target or die trying. The group noted several enemy fighters in the area. The gunners were not concerned with them since they were being chased by a whole formation of P-51 Mustangs. As always, the flak was the usual Ploesti variety--walkin stuff. And due to flak damage, TINGS IS TUFF barely made it back.
