The 500 defendants whom were tried today did not get the death penalty yet. Theres a unique process for implementing the death penalty in Egypt. The Mufti has a consultative opinion on it (a non binding veto right) Then theres an automatic appeal process to the high court. Therefore, they will not be hanged until they exhaust their legal avenues of appeal, which is somewhat lengthy. Add to that, there are some defendants tried in absentia, which means that they will be retried once arrested. (This post is for my friends abroad, who are reading the press and dont know the Egyptian judicial system)
