The 5000m former Standard Bank building in Adderley Street was home to the bank from 1883 and was its head office from 1885 to 1953. The grand old lady is topped by a statue of Britannia, and was designed in the neo-classic style by Charles Freeman. Several years ago the bank’s activities had dwindled to 73 members of staff operating on only one floor and the bank decided to close this branch. Right now the building is empty and what is to become of it is unknown.
