The 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment is currently the 1st Brigade of the 82nd Airborne Division. They have been a part of the division since 1942 and have served their nation in many theaters of war all over the world. The unit has the distinction of having a interesting nickname of the black hearted devils in baggy pants. A name that was given to them from a journal of a Nazi officer found in World War II where he gave this name to them due to their combat feats in the war. The 504 Devils are an infantry brigade that is comprised of mostly infantry soldiers with various other supporting troops. The regiment is broken down into smaller units and are sometimes deployed with other units as well as independently. The regiment has served in various conflicts including World War II, Honduras, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Desert Storm, Afghanistan, Iraq and Panama (and one technically in Vietnam). The Devils have the distinction of many firsts and records in the Army. They were the first to jump (parachute) in Holland, capture of largest span bridge of World War II, first to jump into Italy (WW2), first airborne troops to fight in Sicily (WW2), first Allied troops to pass into Venafro (WW2), first to win Presidential Unit Citation at Anzio, first to assault across the Rhine (WW2) and the first to cross the Sigfried Line (WW2). As you may see, the Army and especially the Airborne units are especially proud of their heritage. The proud legacy of their airborne forefathers instils pride and honor among the devils and ensures that for decades in the future our nation will be guarded by these paratroopers. So from now on, if you see a soldier with a devil on his shirt, know that he is one of the best, a 504th Devil.
