The 55th North Carolina were in the brigade of Joseph R. Davis. Which consisted of the 55th North Carolina and the 2nd, 11th and 42nd Mississippi. Captain C.M. Cooke of the 55th wrote an interesting note about Colonel John K. Connally, also of the 55th, at Gettysburg that first day. Colonel Connally, while the regiment was advancing, seized the battle flag and waved it encouragingly. He was at once shot down. Major Belo, who was near him, sprang to his side, inquiring whether he was much hurt. Yes, answered the colonel, but do not pay any attention to me.
