The 60s and 70s were a turbulent time in American race relations. I was in junior high during desegregation; however, I wasn’t exposed to a lot of racism as a child. My parents never mentioned race or discussed politics, and except for a little bullying on the afternoon bus ride, I was entirely oblivious to what was going on around me. I‘ve had black neighbors, black friends, black employers and employees, and it never occurred to me to treat them any differently than I would treat anyone else.
