The 9th-century Arab polymath Jābir ibn Hayyān, known in the Latin alchemical tradition as Geber, states in his Book of Stones that the purpose of his symbolic style of writing is to baffle and lead into error everyone except those whom God loves and provides for. He deliberately wrote in a highly cryptic manner so that only those who had been initiated into his alchemical school could understand his writings. Hence the origin of the term gibberish.
