The 9th meeting of ICN’s 10-member Observatory on Licensure and Registration, chaired by Dr Judith Shamian ICN President, was held in Geneva on 11 -12 November. The purpose of the Observatory is to inform ICN work and enable ICN and the nursing profession to anticipate and respond in a timely, appropriate, efficient and effective manner to international regulatory developments by providing leadership in influencing policy on global regulatory matters. Topics discussed at this meeting included: bringing the patient’s voice to nursing regulation; input to the revision of ICN’s Model Nursing Act Toolkit; regulation of Advanced Practice Nursing; and review of the global education, regulation and health human resource agenda. In addition, an environmental scan was carried out to discuss key issues and regulatory trends in Observatory members’ regions. The Observatory includes membership from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, North America and the Western Pacific. Frances Ganges, Chief Executive of the International Confederation of Midwives, also joined this meeting as an observer.
