The ACT Secondary Schools Team 2014 The SSA Golf Championships 2014 was held in Queensland at the City Golf Club in Toowoomba. As a team, the boys and girls both finished fifth in the teams stroke event. In the match play event, the boys and girls teams finished in fourth and sixth position respectively. The boy’s highlight of the match play event was winning against Western Australia and squaring Queensland, who was a tough opponent. The girls highlight was squaring their match against South Australia. The girls won more individual matches in comparison to previous years. Josh Armstrong finished second in the boy’s individual stroke play event, just two shots behind the winner. Josh went onto earn a much deserved place in the Australian Boys Merit Team where he was also named as the captain. Chloe Thornton finished third in the girls individual stroke play event with Madeleine Hunter not far behind in fifth place. Amber Thornton in her first year appearance at these championships had the best match play results with 3 wins, a square and a loss. The team were excellent ambassadors for their families, schools, clubs and School Sport ACT and demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship. It was noted by convenors and spectators how well the ACT team conducted themselves on the golf course. James Correll and Jessica McManus were the captains of the boys and girls teams respectively, and displayed fantastic encouragement and leadership over the week. It was our pleasure to be involved with these teams.
