The AQUOS Quattron 3D Principle As we go about our daily lives, we take spatial, three-dimensional vision for granted. In contrast, images and films recorded using technology are generally only two-dimensional. If we want to achieve a 3D effect in films, we have to rely on a special technology which fools our brains into seeing a third dimension. When we look at an object, our right and left eyes see it from slightly different viewing angles. This difference in the viewing angles is known as parallax. The slightly different images which result are the raw material which our brains merge into a single view with depth perception. This is the principle used in projecting a 3D picture onto the screen of an LCD TV. The AQUOS Quattron 3D LCD TV projects one image for the left eye and one for the right eye; there is a slight difference in the viewing angles of these two images, generating the spatial effect of depth. This is the reason why genuine 3D films are ideally produced using a stereo camera which films the scene from these two viewing angles (with about the same distance as between our two eyes). How does that work if our LCD TV projects only one image? This is where a second technical trick comes into play. The AQUOS Quattron 3D LCD TV projects the two single images from different viewing angles in quick succession. Viewers need so-called shutter glasses so that the right eye sees only the image recorded by the camera on the right and the left eye sees only the image on the left. The Active Shutter System from Sharp in the glasses darkens the two LCD lenses in alternation and synchronously to the correct image for the left or right eye as it is flashed onto the LCD TV. Sharp has doubled the refresh rate of the LCD TV from 100 Hz to 200 Hz and improved the LED backlight (Double Speed Scanning LED Backlight) to minimize any perception of flickering caused by the alternating darkening of the lenses. The combination of these features ensures that viewers can see the 3D film with full 100 Hz and in full HD without any ghost images, trailing effects, or eye strain. The technology — F.R.E.D.: 200 Hertz for fast and very bright pictures The optimized refresh rate (F.R.E.D. = Frame Rate Enhanced Driving) plays an important role in the sharp clarity of movement in fast image sequences. Sharp uses 200-Hertz technology to secure an even faster sequence of the single images. Using F.R.E.D., Sharp has succeeded in reducing the number of electronic circuits responsible for the control of the individual pixels by half. As a consequence, the share of opaque segments in this part of the display is also lowered. This leads to a better utilization of the backlighting and an improvement in panel brightness; there is a positive effect on both the ecological balance and the 3D image.
