The ASME Adaptive Structures and Materials Systems Branch is again organizing the Best Student Paper Competition and the Student Hardware Competition as part of the SMASIS 2013 conference in Snowbird, UT, this fall. This is a reminder that the deadline for the student competitions are fast approaching. The competitions include Best Student Paper Competition and Best Student Hardware Competition. We encourage you to apply. Here is some of the key information, for full details please visit: https://asmeconferences.org/SMASIS2013/StudentEvents.cfm Important Dates: July 10, 2013: Submission of a PDF file of your paper to the contest chairs via E-mail by 5 pm Eastern Standard Time (EST). Please put paper number in the subject line. August 16, 2013: Notification made to finalist. September 16, 2013: Presentations made by finalists in the SMASIS conference special sessions September 17, 2013: Conference award winners announced at the Pioneer Banquet Eligibility: To be eligible for these competitions you must: (1) Be a student (graduate or undergraduate) at the time of the SMASIS 2013 conference. While other authors may be listed on the paper, the student must have contributed the majority of the effort presented and in the writing of the paper. (2) Have submitted a full-length paper to the SMASIS conference that will be presented at a regular session. If you received an extension and have submitted a paper prior to the competition deadline then you are eligible. (3) Submit a pdf of your paper to the competition organizers before 5pm on July 10, 2013 to the chair of the competition Best Student Paper Competition – Bjoern Kiefer ([email protected]) and Heidi Feigenbaum ([email protected]) Best Student Hardware Competition – Lingyu Yu ([email protected]) (4) Commit to attend and present at the appropriate special sessions if your paper is selected as a finalist. Students may enter both competitions, but will be limited to one award. Evaluation Criteria: The submitted papers and finalists will each need to explicitly demonstrate a connection to conference topics (smart materials, adaptive structures, integrated systems, etc.), and advance the state-of-the-art. For both competitions, the finalists will be selected solely on the paper, and will include criteria such as: ∙ Relevance to a conference topic ∙ Significance and impact of the work ∙ Creativity and innovation ∙ Completeness and quality of the work Finalists for the Paper Competition will be judged on the quality and effectiveness of the oral presentation given during a special session. Finalists for the Hardware Competition will demonstrate their hardware during a special session at SMASIS and will be judged on the relevant performance characteristics of the system and quality of hardware (reliability, robustness, integration of key systems, etc).
