The Academic Study Skills Team is running a programme of SOS (Secrets of Success) workshops throughout the year. The first series of workshops commences 7th October 2013. Workshops will be held on the Wrexham campus at the Academic Skills Centre on the ground floor of the library. Booking is essential as places are limited – phone 01978 293981 or call in at our desk on the ground floor of the library. Workshop times are: Mondays at 12 noon -1pm; Tuesdays 1pm – 2pm; Wednesdays 12 noon – 1pm; Thursdays 1pm-2pm; Fridays 12 noon – 1pm. ************************************ Independent Learning: Every lunchtime from Monday 7th October to Friday 11th October. See above for times. Because independent learning is vital to your success, this workshop will focus on learning how to learn at university. Skills for developing independent learning include: getting the most out of lectures; how to read and research effectively; working to deadlines; taking notes; managing your time. Assignment Planning: Every lunchtime from Monday 14th October to Friday 18th October. See above for times. This workshop will focus on strategies such as planning the timescale of your work, unpicking the assignment title and using the marking guidelines. We will discuss what an assignment should look like and how to maximise your marks. Academic Writing: Every lunchtime from Monday 21st October to Friday 25th October. See above for times. This workshop will focus on structuring your assignment to maximise marks. Using Journal Articles: Every lunchtime from Monday 4th November to Friday 8th November. See above for times. Journals often contain the latest research in your particular area of study, and your lecturers will expect you to read them and refer to them in your assignments. This workshop will discuss the use of journals and how to read, reference and critique a journal article. Harvard 1: Every lunchtime from Monday 11th November to Friday 15th November. See above for times. Some students lose valuable marks because they are not referencing (including sources of evidence) correctly. We will show you how to gain this essential skill. Harvard 2: Every lunchtime from Monday 18th November to Friday 22nd November. See above for times. This workshop is for students who are familiar with the Harvard form of referencing, but want to avoid losing marks through making referencing mistakes. Come along, ask questions and practice your Harvard referencing in a small group. Improve Your Marks: Every lunchtime from Monday 25th November to Friday 29th November. See above for times. Do not lose valuable marks by rushing your assignment. Attend this workshop to learn how to maximize effort on your assignment.
