The Academic Writing MOOC, “College Writing 2x” will start again on Feb. 4 with the second of three five-week courses, “Principles of Written English Part 2”. For your information, we have included some tools that can help with facilitation. General info: College Writing 2.2x is the second part of the academic writing course. In this part, you will focus on proofreading and self-editing; revision vs. editing; common errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling; understanding tone and diction; vocabulary development. The course materials will be offered via readings, videos, and various types of homework assignments. There are suggested optional textbooks for additional writing work. You will participate in online discussions as well as peer review of your writing. You will complete one full essay for this part of the course. Please remember that students should be proficient enough in English to follow an introductory level university course in order to participate. The course will comprise a review of basic grammar terminology and understanding; writing effective sentences and paragraphs; introductions and conclusions; strategies for writing longer texts; and thesis statements. Course materials will be offered via readings and videos. Students will participate in online discussions as well as peer review of their writing. When: The first module of Part 2 begins February 4, 2015. For Whom: This is a university level introduction to academic writing for non-native English language speakers. Students should be able to follow lectures and readings in English (think first year international students). Facilitated Sessions: What: Face-to-face meetings/workshops/discussions for a group of participants you have invited/identified to take the course (also called MOOC Camps…see below for more details). The sessions can be used to clarify issues raised in the lectures or to conduct supplemental activities related to the current week’s topic. When: Ideally weekly; at least bi-weekly By Whom: RELOs, English Language Fellows, ETAs, Peace Corps Volunteers, REACs, EducationUSA Advisors, exchange alumni, PAS staff, Embassy officers, etc. can all be facilitators. We encourage co-facilitation where possible to maximize creativity and minimize workload. Tips and General guidance from the ECA MOOC Working Group: • Publicize widely and openly the opportunity to participate, particularly through social media. • Host a graduation ceremony for students completing the course. • Introduce students to EducationUSA advisors after course completion to discuss opportunities to study in the United States. • Offer outside guest speakers on topics discussed in the course and other enrichment activities. • Use American Spaces for enrichment activities and facilitated discussions. • Reward and officially recognize successful facilitators.
