The Accountability of Human Leaders! Psalm 82:1-8 A Psalm of Asaph. God has taken his place in the divine council; in the midst of the gods he holds judgment: 2) How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? Selah. 3) Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. 4) Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. 5) They have neither knowledge nor understanding, they walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken. 6) I said, You are gods, sons of the Most High, all of you; 7) nevertheless, like men you shall die, and fall like any prince. 8) Arise, O God, judge the earth; for you shall inherit all the nations!” This psalm is a powerful threat to those who are given authority to lead and judge among the nations! In it, God Himself is depicted as being on the judicial bench and before Him are gathered all of those to whom He has delegated authority to lead, legislate and judge the people of the nations. We need to embrace the truth that presidents, law makers, judges, kings and prime ministers all receive their authority from God and will in time give account for the use of that authority to a Holy God, whose eyes see everything and know of every act of corruption and bribery. In this psalm, the judged are found guilty of perverting justice by not defending or delivering the oppressed from the oppressor. God’s law is perfect justice for all. Corruption and bribes pervert that justice so that the wicked are able to abuse the law to impose their will and enrich themselves unlawfully. Corrupt judges and leaders walk in darkness. The light of truth and justice is shutoff. The result is that the moral foundations of social order are shaken and society crumbles into darkness and destruction like an earthquake. God reminds human authorities that they were appointed to their positions by His divine decree and He holds them responsible for the injustice they have done. In America, politicians need to understand that they will answer to Someone far more holy and powerful than the electorate. Verse 8 calls upon God to assume the position of leading the earth Himself, removing the evil of corrupt judges and human leaders. This is sure to happen when the Lord Jesus returns and brings with Him the Kingdom of Heaven! Even so, come, Lord Jesus!
