The Administrative Appeals Tribunal is a commonwealth government agency. The Tribunal currently has a temporary legal vacancy in its Melbourne office. The position may be of interest to some law students. Title Administrative Assistant Legal Registry Melbourne Registry Classification AAT Broadband 3/4 (APS Level 4) Position Conditions Non-ongoing (12 months), full-time Position Contact Susan Woodford (03) 9282 8400 Closing date 3 November 2014 The Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) provides independent review of a wide range of administrative decisions made by the Australian Government and some non-government bodies. The AAT also reviews decisions of the Norfolk Island Government. The AAT consists of the President, other presidential members (who may be judges or Deputy Presidents), Senior Members and Members. The President, with the assistance of the Registrar, is responsible for managing the AAT and its resources. The AAT also employs staff under the Public Service Act 1999. Staff are Commonwealth public servants and are employed as either ongoing or non-ongoing to perform a range of duties including management of the Tribunals Registries, conducting conferences, legal research, provision of client services and support services to Members. The Tribunal has offices in all states of Australia and in the Australian Capital Territory. District Registry – Melbourne The Tribunal has a District Registry in each capital city except Darwin. In each District Registry an Executive Deputy President or Senior Member and the District Registrar are responsible for local registry management. Conference Registrars are appointed in each District Registry to conduct conferences and other alternate dispute resolution processes. There are two full-time temporary (12 months) vacancies in the Melbourne District registry. One vacancy is in the Members Support Team, providing administrative support to a number of members, and the second is working directly with a member of the Tribunal. This recruitment exercise may also be used for future vacancies. POSITION DESCRIPTION Duties: Either individually or as a member of a support team: 1. Ensure the efficient and effective conduct of hearing, including recording and safe keeping of exhibits, swearing in witnesses and recording orders. 2. Assist with the preparation and legal editing of Tribunal orders, decisions and reasons for decision. Prepare catchwords and summaries of reasons for decision. 3. Provide administrative support which may include pre-hearing liaison with parties and case management of files. 4. Draft directions and interlocutory orders. 5. Undertake legal research which may include case law research, monitoring of legislation and/or preparation of case summaries. 6. Assist with the efficient conduct of Members’ offices, including maintenance of library, attending to correspondence, diary maintenance and filing. NOTE: Individual positions at this level may be assigned work focussing on particular duties to address local registry needs. Duties are in no particular order of importance. Job Knowledge & Skills (Identifies the knowledge and skills that the occupant of this position should possess in order to effectively perform the duties) a) A high standard in written and oral communication skills; b) Proven well-developed legal research skills including retrieval of information electronically; c) Knowledge of the operations, jurisdiction, practice and procedure of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal or a demonstrated capacity to acquire that knowledge quickly. 2. Personal Attributes (Identifies the personal qualities that the occupant of the position should possess in order to efficiently perform the duties - usually verified by referees) a) Highly developed liaison and interpersonal skills; b) Highly developed organisational skills, particularly when dealing with competing demands for time and attention; c) An ability to work effectively as part of a small team, particularly in a supervisory role; 3. Other Requirements (eg. desirable educational qualifications, formal training etc, that can be identified as being applicable to the actual duties of the position) a) A completed, or substantially completed recognised degree in Laws of an Australia tertiary institution or comparable overseas qualification, which, in the opinion of the Registrar, is appropriate to the duties of the office; b) Word processing skills and familiarity with computer-based information systems including legal research tools; c) Demonstrated knowledge of, and commitment to, the APS Values, APS Code of Conduct and the APS Employment Principles; d) Demonstrated knowledge and commitment to the principles of Workplace Diversity, Workplace Health and Safety and participative work practices; e) Availability to travel.
