The Africa region has been elected to lead the International Coordinating Committee of National Institutions for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights (ICC) for the next three years. The international body includes over 90 ‘A status’ and ‘B status’ national human rights institutions from each of the four regions: Africa, the Americas, Asia Pacific and Europe. Lawrence Mushwana, Chairman of the South African Human Rights Commission, was formally elected to the position of ICC Chairperson at the 26th ICC General Meeting, held in Geneva from 6-8 May 2013. In the previous three years, Rosslyn Noonan (2010-2012), former Chief Commissioner of the New Zealand Human Rights Commission, and Dr Mousa Burayzat (2012-2013), Commissioner General of the Jordan National Centre for Human Rights, represented the Asia Pacific region as ICC Chairperson. “Ms Noonan and Dr Burayzat provided tremendous leadership for the ICC over the past three years and helped raise international recognition of the vital role played by national human rights institutions in all parts of the globe,” said Kieren Fitzpatrick, Director of the APF secretariat. The 26th ICC Meeting, which was opened by Navi Pillay, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, considered five key themes: 20 years – the Vienna Declaration, Paris Principles and the ICC; planning for the future the report of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders follow-up on the Amman Declaration and Programme of Action, adopted at the ICC’s 11th International Conference on the human rights of women and girls Human Rights and Post-2015 Development Agenda the right to participation. The meeting also considered a report by the APF on the advocacy campaign to secure independent participation at the UN Commission on the Status of Women. Date: 14 May 2013
