The African-American Spring In recent years we witnessed the Arab Spring in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Syria, and elsewhere. You will recall that those events lasted for days and weeks, resulting in some instances in the removal of non-responsive power structures that had ignored vulnerable, voiceless, and victimized populations for decades. Recall also that the Arab Spring was not pretty. In response to those uprisings, many elected leaders in America, including President Barack Obama, affirmed those uprisings, condemned military overreactions and overreach, and called on Arab leaders to listen responsively while making changes to benefit their citizens. Are we witnessing the start of the African American Spring? Is Americas elected leadership, law enforcement, and military capable of exercisingng the same restraint, tolerance, respect for the discontented masses, and responsible government that they called on Arab leaders to exercise? Are we capable of looking at the events in Ferguson through global lenses?
