The African National Congress is saddened by the untimely disappearance and alleged drowning of two learners from RB Dithupe Secondary School in Ramotsere Moiloa, when on an annual Grade Nine (9) school educational vacation in Cape Town, Camps Bay. The incident took place on the 25th September 2013. On arrival in Cape Town-Camps Bay, the learners were instructed by their educators to stay-way from the rough sea. But one learner ignored the educators instructions and went to the sea to swim. The other two learners saw their fellow learner drowning and went to rescue him and succeeded. They both disappeared in the course of rescuing their fellow learner and their bodies have not been found. As the ANC in North West, we wish their parents, school headmaster and the MEC for Education in the North West, Cde Wendy Matsemela, the best when visiting Cape Town tomorrow, the 2nd October 2013, to establish more facts on this unfortunate tragedy. We also are grateful to the rescue team which is working tirelessly to locate the bodies of these two learners. We however make an appeal to all the schools in our province to ensure that when undertaking such vacations, all safety measures are kept in check and all learners; movements are monitored continuously. In another sad turn of events, a Principal from Zeerust Hoer School, Simon Petrus Botha, died, whilst his wife Elsie Susana Botha was brutally assaulted and raped in an incident of robbery that happened at their home. Elsie is an educator at the RB Dithupe School. She is critical but recovering well in hospital. The ANC in the North West condemns such a barbaric act committed against innocent people. We appeal to our law enforcement agencies to arrest the perpetrators of such horrible criminality without any delay. Criminals have no place in our society. They have no place in our communities but they belong in jail. We further make an appeal to all the citizens of North West to report any suspicious activity in their neighbourhood to the police to ensure that we make our neighbourhood safe and no-entry zone for criminals. We further appeal to any person with information that might lead to the arrest of the perpetrators to contact the nearest police station. The ANC leadership in the North West province will visit all the effected families, more information will be provided in this regard.
