The African Skimmer is such a beautiful bird, arguably one of the most skilled flyers. They are quite rare in Chobe. I photographed this pair feeding a one day old chic. They were the only breeding pair on a a tiny island a year after all the skimmer nests and eggs were destroyed accidentally by elephants that couldnt cross all the way through to Namibia, because a little calf were too scared to cross further than the island. They spent the night and in the process destroyed all the nests. I saw a Marabu stork trying to take the little chic, and i presume he was successful as the next day the nest were abandoned. What is the status of the African Skimmer in South Africa and in Botswana?
