The Alaska Aces could not contain the hot-shooting Rain Or Shine Elasto Painters to lose 78-92 in the 2014 Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup Saturday, March 15 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Cyrus Baguio and Rob Dozier each hit a three-pointer as the Aces started the fourth period with a 10-2 run to cut the Rain Or Shine lead to just four points, 68-72, with 8:27 to go in the game. But Jeff Chan torched the Aces with four consecutive triples without a miss as the Elasto Painters outscored the Aces 18-5 in the next five minutes to virtually seal the game with Alaska trailing by 17 points, 73-90, with just 2:45 left to play. With the loss the Aces (1 win, 3 losses) dropped to solo eighth place. Leading the standings are the unbeaten Talk N Text Tropang Texters (3-0), the San Miguel Beermen (2-1), the Air21 Express (2-1) and the San Mig Super Coffee Mixers (1-0). The other teams include Barangay Ginebra San Miguel (1-1), the Meralco Bolts (1-1), the Barako Bull Energy Colas (1-2), the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (0-1), and the GlobalPort Batang Pier (0-3). The Aces shot a poor 55.9 percent from the free throw line, missing 15 free throws. They also did not protect the basketball committing 19 turnovers. Dondon Hontiveros scored the first basket of the Aces then followed it up with a triple four minutes later as the Aces took the early lead, 9-3, with 8:16 to go in the first quarter. But Chris Tiu, exploiting a rare start, scored seven points in the first seven minutes of the game to power Rain Or Shine to a 16-12 lead with 3:40 to go in the first period. Rain Or Shine would eventually hold on to an 18-17 lead after the first period. Dozier had counterpart Alex McLean’s number early in the game. With 1:49 to go in the first period Dozier blocked McLean twice the second time even grabbing the ball and starting a fastbreak attack. With 2:33 to go in the second period McLean again tried to post up Dozier but the Alaska import again blocked him and again took control of the ball to start a fastbreak attack. Rain Or Shine threatened to rip the game wide open in the second period after Raymond Almazan scored on a slam as the Aces trailed by nine, 26-35, with 3:48 to go in the second period. But the Aces finished the period with a 6-3 run to cut the Rain Or Shine lead to just six markers, 32-38, at halftime.
