The Alaska SeaLife Center admitted its first stranded marine mammal of 2014: a one-week-old spotted seal pup. A local resident picked up the female pup from Clarks Point in Bristol Bay after searching the area for other seals and receiving authorization for the rescue from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and ASLC. The pup is currently being cared for by veterinary and animal care staff at the SeaLife Center. Shes being fed 5 times a day with a formula created specifically for seals containing nutrients and calories needed to grow. Visitors to the Alaska SeaLife Center can view the spotted seal in the I.Sea.U critical care unit through viewing windows near the Touch Tank. Thanks to Grant Aviation and PenAir for providing transportation of the pup from Bristol Bay to Anchorage, where it was then met by ASLCs wildlife response team. ASLC responds to spotted seals with the authorization of NOAA. Remember -- If you think you see a stranded or injured marine animal, do NOT pick it up. Call first!
