The Aleut (Unangan) were disrupted by the Russians and further by the internment during WWII. The Jesse Lee Home was created by Methodist missionaries for the orphans of this time period. The Home later moved to Seward. Many famous children grew up in this home including Benny Benson, the designer of the Alaska flag. One of the the other famous graduates was Peter Gordon Gould, who established the Alaska Methodist University. His life story is an inspiration.
