The Alvarez were a leading force in the community at the time. Aida Alvarez was somehow able to rally the troops and get as many kids involved in the Christmas Pageant that she was able to produce in Spanish with the help of many others in the parish. It was also an opportunity for the kids to perform in the language used at home while goofing off between scenes in English as they were bilingual. The Alvarezs had a way of getting everyone involved from kids to parents and grandparents too. Aida along with Mary Egan and many others in the parish help organize and teach an English as a second language program (ESL). It was during these early years that Felipe Alvarez responded to the call for Deaconship and later was ordained. By that time the family had moved and he was asked to serve in the nearby parish of St. Josephs of Astoria. We had a combined effort collecting food and clothing the days after the Sandy Hurricane. The Alvarez continue to organize the troops.
