The Amara for Chicago campaign is pleased with todays announcement by Chicago Police Department Superintendent Garry McCarthy that the department will begin testing body cameras in 60 days. The Amara for Chicago campaign is the ONLY campaign that has put forth a specific set of recommendations to enhance public safety in Chicago and has been calling for the use of body cams for police since early this year. The latest round of appeals for new public safety policy came last week: us3.campaign-archive1/?u=da30d14eefaabaa91caef146b&id=9499b55bdc Moreover, President Obama just announced federal funds to be allocated for the procurement of 50,000 bodycams for police departments across the country. A portion of these federal dollars can help defray the costs of implementation in Chicago. my.chicagotribune/#section/544/article/p2p-82141033/ Now that the administration is moving on body cams, we must continue to press for increased investments in Restorative Justice programming, increased diversity within the police force, enhanced training that builds relationships and trust in the community, and an independent police accountability council. amaraforchicago Proponents hope the cameras will reduce the number of citizen complaints and costly lawsuits over police misconduct while at the same time discouraging citizens from making baseless accusations. chicagotribune/news/local/breaking/ct-mccarthy-crime-body-cameras-met-20141201-story.html
